Sound Therapy FAQ
How can sound heal? Vibrations are especially useful for healing the body. The adult body is 75% water, and water is a great conductor for sound vibration, when vibrations travel through the body, they promote circulation, energy flow, and rejuvenation. The frequency of the sound synchronizes with the brainwaves and activates destress responses in the body. When sound waves reach our ears, they are converted into electrical signals that travel up the auditory nerve into the auditory cortex, the part of the brain that processes sound. Once sound waves reach our brains, they trigger responses in our bodies. This process alters our emotions, releases hormones, and triggers certain impulses.
What can I expect during a sound healing session? With most alternative healing modalities and meditative practices, everyone’s experience can be different and no two sessions are the same as new things rise to the surface. Majority of people will find sound healing to be very relaxing both physically and mentally, some might have visual (clairvoyant) or auditory (clairaudient) experiences, some may have an emotional release/break-through or physical purge like screaming or vomiting in intense cases. This is all very normal and it’s best to go with it, don’t hold back what is trying to be released. During a sound healing session typically, you will lie down on a yoga mat or massage table or be seated in a comfortable position with blankets and pillows or anything else that will may you feel most comfortable. You’ll simply close your eyes relax and then just listen to the variety of sounds that the practitioner plays. Some practitioners will also go around to each participant with an instrument and play it within the energy field (aura) of the person. In an individual 1:1 session the practitioner may even place the singing bowls, tuning forks, therapy grade chimes or other special instruments near or on the body to promote the flow of energy and vibrations, which help lymphatic flow and muscle relaxation. Is there anything I need to prepare myself for before or after a session? Before a session it’s best to be relaxed and not rushed around running errands or doing chores so that you are in a more receiving mode. Wear comfortable clothing appropriate for the current weather. After a session it is recommended to drink water and rest your body.
Why do I feel physically uncomfortable during or after a session? Firstly, this is normal to feel and not uncommon. This is due to an energetic release of stagnant dense energies within the physical, emotional or spiritual body that you’ve been holding onto consciously or unconsciously. It’s also referred to as an “energetic purge” or “healing crisis”. Your body’s goal is to maintain an equilibrium even when there are unhealthy toxic parts within. The idea with sound and energy healing is to essentially shake up the unhealthy parts and cells to remove, release and unblock the heavy stuck or stagnant energy that is holding you back from being your best and healthiest version of you. So, when you do this there will be a powerful shift in the balance that the body has worked hard to maintain. It can also be normal to feel an increase in pain during a session or in the first hours, days or weeks initially following, as what you’re doing is replacing the old low energy with the new higher frequency energies. It is said that the worst symptoms happen right before the healing process starts.
What is the duration of session? Sound Healing sessions typically go for 1 hour but can go for up to 1.5 hours depending on what type of session you have booked.
How many sessions do I need? The number of sessions required will depend on what the individuals needs are. A single session is sufficient for a relaxation experience. Multiple sessions are recommended for a significant shift or change.
Where do you hold the sessions? I hold sound and energy sessions via Telehealth or I can come to you. Travel fees will apply.
How can I incorporate sound healing into my life? Attending a weekly group sound healing can bring many benefits to your life. Listening to a sound healing online via Youtube can also be helpful when you cannot attend in-person sessions, however they may not be of the same quality as in person. Purchasing your own singing bowl such as the heart chakra ‘F’ note for yourself to play with is another option to create a regular sound healing practice in your life.
I can’t meditate, can I still join in? Absolutely! Sound healing is for everyone and is a great way to start a meditation practice of your own. It helps switch the mind chatter off allowing you to experience stillness and relaxation.
What if I have an injury or physical disability? Sound healing in most cases can be a supportive modality for injuries and disabilities. It’s recommended to let me know so I know how best to support you
What if I wear hearing aids? Yes, you can still attend sound healing if you have hearing aids, although it’s recommended to take them out or adjust the volume. You will still receive the benefits as the vibrations and frequencies can also be felt and taken in on an energetic level.
I’m pregnant can I still attend? Yes, research has shown that sound healing is incredibly beneficial whilst pregnant. However it’s recommended to be a little further away from the instruments in order to reduce the volume or strong vibrations to your baby. It is also recommended that you have moved past your first trimester (12weeks) as this timeframe is vulnerable.
I have a pacemaker or metal in my body, can I still attend? If you have a pace-maker it is NOT recommended to attend, however please ask your doctor and have written consent that you are permitted to attend. If you have metal in your body (pins, rods, plates) you may attend but please ask your doctor first and advise your practitioner so an appropriate distance is maintained. It has been reported that people may feel the metal vibrating within their body, some have felt a little pain whilst others have not. It’s different for every case.
I’ve had a sound healing before but didn’t enjoy it, is it worth trying again? Definitely try again! Every practitioner, the way they work and/or event /environment can be completely different from the next. There could be many reasons as to why you didn’t enjoy a particular experience, from the energy of the facilitator, the energy of the space or the group of people and the energy that you yourself brought in at the time. My suggestion is to try the same facilitator twice and if you don’t feel it resonate with you on either occasion, then look for a different sound healing practitioner.
